About Each Temple

Yamunotri Temple

Yamunotri marks the sacred source of the Yamuna River and represents the first step of the Chota Char Dham pilgrimage. The Yamuna is revered as a goddess who purifies devotees of their sins. The act of cooking offerings in the natural boiling springs symbolizes surrender to divine grace.

Gangotri Temple

Gangotri marks the descent of the holiest river in Hinduism to earth. The Ganga is believed to purify all sins, and her source is among the most sacred places on earth. The legend of Bhagiratha's penance teaches the power of unwavering devotion and the lengths to which one must go for the liberation of ancestors.

Kedarnath Temple

Kedarnath represents atonement and divine forgiveness — even the sin of fratricidal war can be absolved through sincere devotion and arduous pilgrimage. The extreme altitude and difficult trek symbolize the effort required for spiritual redemption. As simultaneously a Jyotirlinga, Chota Char Dham, and Panch Kedar site, Kedarnath holds a triple significance unmatched by any other Hindu temple. The triangular lingam representing the bull's hump is unique among all Shiva temples.

Badrinath Temple

Badrinath represents the eternal presence of Vishnu in meditation for the welfare of all beings. It is the foremost of the Char Dhams and one of the holiest sites in Vaishnavism.
